FAQs

WHAT CLOTHING SHOULD I BRING FOR A DAY TRIP?

Ynys Hywel provides all necessary protective clothing including waterproofs and boots. If you have your own, please feel free to bring them with you. Please make sure the clothing you wear underneath is suitable for the outdoors (i.e. shoes and socks not sandals, no tight jeans or fancy clothes.) Even with protective clothing you will get a bit muddy and wet. You may want to bring a complete change of clothes and a towel, this is essential for gorge walks or caving.

IS YNYS HYWEL OWNED BY THE COUNCIL?

No. Ynys Hywel was purchased by ACT Training, Wales’s largest training provider, in 2011. ACT Training runs the centre for the benefit of their learners as well as commercially for schools, youth groups, corporate team building and charities.

WHAT ANIMALS DO YOU HAVE AT YNYS HYWEL?

Two goats (named Socks and Sandals), two pigs, around thirty chickens, ten turkeys and a hive of bees.

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM/MINIMUM GROUP SIZE?

Most sessions are charged per group. We recommend a minimum of 2 participants for safeguarding reasons. We recommend a group of 12 for maximum quality and value but can take more on certain sessions. This can be discussed upon booking.

HOW MANY GROUPS CAN I BRING?

Mostly it is two groups for residential and offsite activities, however we can accommodate more during team building, primary residential and round robin days.

CAN I BRING MY OWN FOOD?

We can cater for all dietary requirements and we won’t let you go hungry. If you do bring food we have storage in the kitchen for you. Please do not have food in the rooms for the sake of hygiene. It should also be noted we do not allow energy drinks on site.

ARE THERE WEIGHT LIMITS FOR ACTIVITIES?

The only size consideration is waist size, our biggest harness is 56″.

HOW MANY STAFF DO I NEED TO BRING FOR MY GROUP?

We only require you to bring one member of staff per group, however you know your group best so bring staff to best meet their needs. We recommend at least 2 members of staff for residential for safeguarding reasons. Ideally one male and one female..

DO MY STAFF NEED TO TAKE PART?

We highly recommend that staff get stuck in with the activities as well. Not only does it model positive behaviour for your group, they’ll also have a much more enjoyable experience. If a member of staff has a good reason not to join in, such as medical reasons, we will require at least one member of staff to be present on the activity.

CAN MY PREGNANT PARTICIPANTS TAKE PART IN ACTIVITIES?

Unfortunately, due to the risk involved, we cannot allow anybody who is pregnant on any activity.

DO YOU HAVE WHEEL CHAIR ACCESS?

The building is wheelchair accessible, with wide doors and a lift between floors. However we have limited accessibility on sessions. Please call to discuss accessibility options.

DO YOU CATER FOR ALLERGIES AND DIETARY REQUIREMENTS?

Do we ever! With a centre manager and Chef who both suffer with food allergies we are probably one of the most sympathetic outdoor centres in the country. We strive to make as much of our food gluten free as possible and are extra careful with contamination. Our five star food hygiene rating is a credit to us. If given early notice, we can make sure we prepare a menu that is to everyone’s tastes and needs.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY GROUP NUMBER CHANGES?

Don’t worry; we understand it’s hard to get definite numbers for an event. Because of this we charge per group to provide some leeway with numbers. If you think you may go above ratio (usually 12:1), contact us so that we can either find an alternative activity that will be suitable or add a small surcharge to accommodate your new numbers.

DO YOU HAVE PARKING?

We have limited parking for about 10 cars. We would recommend car sharing or getting a mini bus. There is additional free parking at the bottom of our hill.

DO YOU PROVIDE TRANSPORT?

We do offer transport that can be arranged whilst making a booking.

CAN I BRING STAG OR HEN GROUPS?

Due to the nature of our business and our policies, we are unable to cater for Stag and Hen Do’s that want to involve alcohol. Otherwise, yes!

DO YOU HAVE AN AALA LICENCE?

IS THE JOHN MUIR AWARD ACCREDITED?

The John Muir award is not an accredited qualification however it is recognised by employers and meets many criteria from the curriculum and ESDGC.

DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN BEDDING?

No, we provide high quality clean linen as well as really comfy memory foam mattresses.
